Halal food and drink certification

A halal food is more than a list of permitted ingredients. TGHA audits the ingredients, the plant, the people and the paperwork, and certifies the products that pass.

What we assess

  • Ingredients and materials: every ingredient, additive, processing aid, packaging material, lubricant and cleaning chemical, checked against halal criteria
  • Production facilities and equipment: free of non-halal substances, with no cross-contact
  • Segregation and cleaning where lines are shared, with documented cleaning between runs
  • Traceability from approved materials to the finished product
  • Management and people: a responsible person, training, internal checks
  • Product name and label: nothing that suggests a non-halal product

Common issues

  • Undeclared animal-derived or alcohol-based ingredients, flavours and emulsifiers
  • Shared equipment, shared storage and weak cleaning between runs
  • A new ingredient or supplier added without a halal review
  • Product names or imagery that suggest a non-halal product
  • Staff who are not trained, and records that are incomplete

Documents we usually ask for

Ingredient lists, process flow charts, supplier halal certificates for higher-risk materials, specification sheets for lower-risk materials, cleaning records, traceability procedures and audit records.

Frequently asked questions

Is a halal-certified ingredient enough?

No. Certification also looks at the plant, the cleaning, cross-contact and the management system, not only the ingredients.

Can halal and non-halal products share a line?

The Codex halal guideline allows shared premises or lines if contact is prevented and equipment is cleaned properly. Each certification body sets its own cleaning rules, and TGHA assesses shared sites case by case.

Does the product name matter?

Yes. Some certification bodies, for example in Indonesia, require a product's name and sensory profile not to resemble a prohibited product.
