Halal cleaning product certification

A detergent is not eaten, but what it is made from still matters to many users, and to food plants that use it on equipment. TGHA checks where the fats, enzymes and fragrances come from and how the product is made.

What we assess

  • The source of surfactants, fatty acids and soap bases, whether animal or plant
  • The source of enzymes. Animal enzymes need to come from properly slaughtered animals. Microbial enzymes need growth media free of prohibited ingredients.
  • Perfumes and fragrances
  • Supplier certificates and declarations
  • Segregation, storage and cross-contamination controls

Where authorities differ

Whether alcohol in a cleaning product is acceptable has not been settled across authorities. Some fatwa bodies permit alcohol-based hand sanitisers on the basis of need, and certification bodies set their own rules. Whether certification is mandatory depends on the market and on how the product is classified there.

Common issues

Animal-fat surfactants and soap bases; animal enzymes; fragrance blends; alcohol in sanitisers and wipes; cleaning agents that are used inside food plants and carry their own halal status.

Documents we usually ask for

Ingredient and supplier declarations, certificates, and technical information sheets.
